Dr. Jonny Bowden “The Great Cholesterol Myth”

“The Great Cholesterol Myth” presented April 2013 at the American Nutrition Association

On his site, Dr Johnny Bowden, PhD, CNS, describes himself as “The Nutrition Myth Buster” and a nationally known expert on weight loss, nutrition and health. He makes no claim to be a medical doctor, but does list himself as “a board-certified nutritionist with a master’s degree in psychology and the author of fourteen books on health, healing, food and longevity including four best-sellers”:

The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth: The Surprising, Unbiased Truth About What You Should Eat and Why

Living Low Carb: Controlled-Carbohydrate Eating for Long-Term Weight Loss

The Great Cholesterol Myth: Why Lowering Your Cholesterol Won’t Prevent Heart Disease-and the Statin-Free Plan That Will

The Great Cholesterol Myth Cookbook: Recipes and Meal Plans That Prevent Heart Disease–Naturally

In this video, presented  April 2013 at the American Nutrition Association, Dr Johnny Bowden outlines why he thinks we have been looking in the wrong place for the real causes of heart disease, diabetes and obesity. He also proposes that it is going to take around 50 years for this to be accepted by the medical fraternity – do you have the time to wait?

Haven’t got an hour to spare for the whole lecture? Fast forward to :  1:06′ for Dr Bowden’s 7 point plan for reducing the risk of heart disease and obesity.

!!Controversy!! In November 2013, the Australian Broadcasting Company (ABC) aired a 2-part documentary on the cholesterol controversy, prominently featuring Dr Johnny Bowden.  The 2-part ABC series has come under very heavy attack from the pharmaceutical industry, medical profession and even MediaWatch felt that the journalism was very one sided, going on to discredit Dr Johnny Bowden and other “experts” featured in the documentary. CTJ is unable to post the ABC documentary episodes as they have now been removed from the ABC website and You Tube following the controversy – this is unfortunate as CTJ always prefers to share the information such that you can make your own informed decisions.I  guess that Dr Johnny Bowden and his colleagues have learnt the truth in the statement that “pioneers have to take the first arrows”…

Blood Pressure and Cholesterol

This second video is quite interesting. Dr John Bergman focuses on NATURAL health alternatives and in this video he covers the subject of cholesterol and blood pressure. His views on cholesterol simply corroborate much of what is said elsewhere on the CTJ Fat vs Sugar site, in that cholesterol is not bad, rather it is vital for a healthy life, but where this video differs is that it opens up the subject of blood pressure as well. When Dr Bergman first started to suggest that high blood pressure is not bad for you, I nearly switched off…, but then I listened a bit more closely to what he was saying – he actually isn’t saying that you should ignore high blood pressure, but what he is saying is that the fact that you may have high blood pressure is simply symptomatic of something else that is underlying this very natural response of the body to deal with the situation. So, for example if you have inflamed and perhaps blocked arteries then that may result in high blood pressure, but it is the underlying issue of “inflamed and blocked arteries” (and what has caused that) that should be the focus of your attention, not the high blood pressure. And really, his logic is quite sound – the pressure in our blood varies throughout the day, depending on the activity that we are undertaking at the time, and that this is simply a normal physiological adaptation in order for our heart to provide to the needs and demands of the activity of the moment – so, for example if you go to the gym, your blood pressure is going to go up in order to supply the extra oxygen that is needed to sustain the activity. Your blood pressure goes up in the gym, but it doesn’t kill you. And, so it is even in the instance of high blood pressure due to blocking of your arteries. This does not mean that you must ignore the symptom, but it does mean that you should treat the real issue, not the symptom – if you take drugs to lower blood pressure, you are actually fighting against your body’s natural ability to cope with the situation and to keep you healthy. That is what is at the core of Dr Bergman’s argument and that makes some sense, at least to me.

It is quite a long video, but certainly an interesting take on yet another controversial subject. Grab a cup of coffee and have a watch.
